Australia's farmed fish prices expected to increase
The cost of farmed fish is expected to skyrocket in the near future as exorbitant grain prices hits the aquaculture industry.
World grain prices have shot up and rapidly escalating fuel prices is affecting the cost of transporting products to the market.
South Australian fish farmer, Peter Docking said he has to start passing the ever-increasing production costs to the consumer. He said feed prices had increased about 10 to 15 percent in a year while transport costs have almost doubled.
Fish farmers across the world are facing similar problems. A recently released report on the Arkansas catfish industry identified that the cost of feed to the industry had increased whilst the end volume and value of production had actually decreased.
