Argentina plants 99 percent of record 2006/07 soy crop

 

 

Argentina has completed seeding 99 percent of the record 16.05 million hectares expected to be dedicated to soybeans this year, the Agriculture Secretariat said in its weekly crop report Friday (Jan 26).

 

Argentina's 2006/07 soy and corn are generally in good condition although insufficient moisture in the south of Buenos Aires province and in some areas of La Pampa province is affecting development, the Secretariat said.

 

 

Soy

 

The Agriculture Secretariat sees a record 43 million tonnes of soybeans coming from the 2006/07 crop, while the US Department of Agriculture forecasts production of 42.5 million tonnes.

 

 

Corn

 

Farmers had also planted 99 percent of the area planned for corn as of Jan 25, the Secretariat said.

 

Crop conditions are generally good, according to the Secretariat.

 

Argentina will produce 21 million tonnes of corn this year, according to the Secretariat. The USDA forecasts 19 million tonnes.

 

 

Wheat

 

The 2006/07 wheat harvest is complete with 14 million tonnes produced according to the Secretariat. The USDA has pegged production at 14.2 million tonnes, while the Buenos Aires Cereals Exchange puts production at 13.8 million tonnes.
