Kenya sees drop on corn prices

Kenya's corn prices have declined considerably due to increased supplies.

The decline in corn prices has come as a relief to consumers, majority who are struggling with high cost of basic commodities despite low inflation rate of 3.2% in December last year, according to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

Corn prices have been on a downward trajectory in Kenya in the past three months as farmers harvested their crops.

The Ministry of Agriculture in its latest report on corn noted that Kenya 's national food situation is stable.

The analysis indicated that corn supply has increased in the east African nation due to good harvests resulting from steady supply of rain during long and short rains season.

Supply of corn and other cereals in Kenya , according to the ministry, improved last year compared to 2011. Prices have dropped by up to 18%.

Increased supply of the commodity in the country has thus pushed down prices of corn from about US$46 a bag five months ago, to a national average of US$32.
