Canada to open new opportunities for livestock sector

Canada will invest US$6 million in the Feed Opportunities from the Biofuels Industries (FOBI) research network, which will work to develop and utilise new market opportunities in the livestock sector.

The government wants to help farmers succeed and it will largely depend on Canadian farmers being able to access new and value-added markets, said Saskatoon-Humboldt Member of Parliament Brad Trost.

The initiative will result in new markets, which will help the domestic livestock sector to improve their bottom line and boost the economy, said Trost.

The FOBI network will focus on creating higher quality livestock feed from ethanol byproducts such as distillers grains. The research will also explore the integration of livestock production and wheat-based ethanol production, and focus on creating new co-products and new markets for existing co-products and Canadian farmers.
