Vietnam to increase seafood output by 9%

Vietnamese fishery industry targets to raise total farming aquatic output by 9% to 2.8 million tonnes this year on the unchanged area of 1.11 million hectares.

The total includes 380,000 tonnes of brackish-water shrimp; 20,000 tonnes of sea-water shrimp; 180,000 tonnes of mollusk; 80,000 tonnes of seaweed; 1.2 million tonnes of pangasius fish; 990,000 tonnes of freshwater fish and 85,000 tonnes of other specialty aquatic products.

The Department of Aquaculture (DA) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that up to 90% of the aquaculture farms in the country will be numbered in and 70% of the aquaculture area will meet food safety standards this year following the EU's IUU regulations.

Last year, Vietnam was home to 3,862 aquatic breeds farms, producing 25 billion prawn shrimp breeds; 13 billion white-legged shrimp breeds; 2 billion pangasius fish breeds and 15 billion freshwater fish breeds.

The country had 90 aquatic feed factories with total output of 1.5 million tonnes last year, meeting only 65% of domestic demand, according to the DA.
