Despite global economic recession and decreased purchasing power, Russia still sees a 12 percent increase in poultry production as red meat output is projected to decline.
Consumers are not expected to purchase pork and beef as much as they used to, hence, demand will shift to cheaper chicken meat, reports MeatRussia.com.
In 2009, the Russian government subsidized 866 million roubles to help agricultural enterprises within the frames of national project "Agricultural Complex" development in the advent of economic crisis.
The complex has identified several problems for meat industry such as shortage of facilities for meat processing, increase of production costs due to feed price hikes in Jan-October 2008, and dependence on imports. Imports in 2008 are expected to chunk in a total to about one-third of Russian meat market.
