Australia's bulk storage of wheat shows increase
At the end of December 2009, Australia's bulk storage of wheat grain was estimated at 17.8 million tonnes, an on-year increase of 23%.
Of the total wheat grain stored by bulk grain handlers, 86% or 15.3 million tonnes was milling grade, and 14% or 2.4 million tonnes was feed grade, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported.
Stored wheat totals in New South Wales reached 4.2 million tonnes in December 2009 compared to 4.6 million tonnes in 2008, according to ABS statistics. Victoria's stored wheat totals increased in December 2009 to 1.5 million tonnes compared to 556,000 tonnes last year.
Queensland recorded more than 1.1 million tonnes of stored grain in December 2009 compared to 1.6 million tonnes at the same time last year. South Australia more than doubled its stored grains to 3.8 million tonnes in December 2009 compared to 1.7 million tonnes in 2008. Western Australia's stored grain totals increased to 7.1 million tonnes in December 2009 compared to 6.1 million tonnes at the same time last year.
