South Jakarta to relocate poultry slaughterhouses
The South Jakarta City Council will relocate poultry slaughterhouses, with the deadline set at April 24, 2010, in order to prevent the spread of bird flu virus.
The slaughterhouses, which are scattered around South Jakarta, will be shifted to Rawa Kepiting, Pulogading, Cakung, Srengseng Raya and Petukangan Utara.
There are about 90 chicken slaughterhouses and shelters in South Jakarta, with most of them located in Kebayoran Lama. That figure does not include the unregistered slaughterhouses at marketplaces, said South Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Fishery Sub Agency Chief Chaidir Taufik.
The government has also intensified the scan on poultry-transporting vehicles entering Jakarta. The Operation Healthy Poultry Transportation programme was conducted because there were many undetected poultry transportations in Jakarta which might carry possible diseases.
