Canadian grain, oilseed production to decline in 2006/07

 

 

Canadian production of eight major grains and oilseeds for 2006/07 is projected to be smaller than 2005/06, according to the market analysis branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The eight major grains and oilseeds are canola, flaxseed, soybeans, wheat, oats, barley, corn and rye.

 

The projected production of the eight major grains and oilseeds in 2006/07 was 64.8 million tonnes, compared with the 2005/06 level of 66.7 million tonnes. The figure for 2004/05 was 63.6 million tonnes.

 

Total exports from Canada during 2006/07 were projected to reach 28.6 million tonnes, up from 27.6 million tonnes forecast for 2005/06. The 2004/05 figure was 23.7 million.

 

For 2006/07, total domestic usage of the grains and oilseeds was expected to reach 40.3 million tonnes, an increase from the 2005/06 estimate of 39.8 million tonnes. For 2004/05, 37.6 million tonnes were used. 

 

The grains and oilseeds were projected to have ending stocks of 15.9 million tonnes in 2006/07. This was a decrease from the 2005/06 estimate of 17.9 million tonnes and compares with the 2004/05 level of 16.3 million tonnes.
