Argentina's 2005 corn exports up 34 percent

Argentina exported 14.93 million tonnes of corn in 2005, according to the latest data from the country's animal and food health agency, Senasa.

That puts corn exports up almost 34 percent from 11.175 million tonnes exported in 2004.

In terms of value, exports totalled US$1.365 billion in 2005, compared with US$1.22 billion in 2004.

Argentina is the world's second largest corn exporter behind the US, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Exports rose largely because local corn production soared to a record 20 million tonnes last year. Argentina had more corn to export and its corn was competitively priced.

Argentina normally exports about 70 percent of its production.
