NZ beef exports to Malaysia still blocked by halal requirements
New Zealand and Malaysian are still trying to find a solution to the halal debate that has banned New Zealand beef exports to Malaysia.
As Malaysian Muslim authorities declared halal slaughtering practices in New Zealand non-compliant with their religious requirements, no New Zealand beef is being exported to Malaysia currently. Malaysia de-listed all beef processing plants in New Zealand last year.
Malaysia meat importers have requested their government to lift the ban on New Zealand beef as there is a growing trade in illegally-imported meat in Malaysia.
However, talks between the two countries have not reached a workable solution to the issue.
