Argentina's 2005 soy exports up 38 percent

Argentina exported 9.87 million tonnes of soybeans in 2005, according to the latest data from the country's animal and food health agency, Senasa, which certifies food exports.

That puts soybean exports up 38 percent from 7.148 million tonnes in 2004.

Argentina shipped US$2.293 billion worth of soy last year, up from US$1.92 million in 2004.

Exports rose because soybean output was higher. In 2004/05 Argentina produced a record 39 million tonnes of soybeans, up from 33 million the previous year, according to Agriculture Secretariat data.

Argentina is the world's third largest soybean producer and exporter behind the US and Brazil, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
