China a potential market for Welsh beef

As the demand for imported meat increases, China could offer market opportunities for Welsh ruminant producers.

Speaking at a Farmers Union of Wales meeting to celebrate Welsh food and farming, Zhou Xiaoming of the Chinese Embassy said Wales had a lot to offer the people of China.

As incomes increase, the Chinese consumer is looking more for imported meat products, he said.

In fact, in the first 11 months of 2009, China imported US$7 million worth of pork products and US$50 million worth of beef.

The door to China is now open to meat products from different countries, he said.
