Argentina exports fresh pork to Eastern Europe after 30-year break
Argentina has solved its sanitation problems and is set to export fresh pork to Eastern Europe next month.
Due to sanitation problems, Argentina has had to restrict its processed meat exports for the last 30 years.
Argentina's pork producers will target smaller markets such as Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Georgia as the country do not have enough pork to supply large markets such as Russia.
According to the Department of Agriculture, Argentina exported 1,685 tonnes of pork products, netting a revenue of US$3.3 million which is a 4.8-percent increase in volume and 21-percent in revenue from 2006.
In 2007, pork production and pork products amounted 320,000 tonnes, up 8 percent from 2006. The sector is expected to increase production by 20 percent for 2008.
