Chile Jan-Nov fish industry exports gain 6.9 percent on-year to US$1.58 billion
                   


Chile's ocean fishing industry exports totalled US$1.58 billion in January through November, up 6.9 percent from the same period a year earlier, industry association Sonapesca said Thursday (January 22).

 

In terms of volume, fishing industry exports totalled 829,468 tonnes in the 11-month period, down 13.2 percent from the same period a year earlier.

 

Fishmeal exports accounted for 53 percent of the sector's exports, or 439,088 tonnes, down 3 percent from the same period a year earlier. In terms of value, fishmeal exports during the period fell 10 percent on the year to US$445.4 million, Sonapesca added.

 

International prices for prime and superprime fishmeal, graded on their protein content, averaged US$1,082 a tonne during the 11-month period, according to the group.

 

Sonapesca, in a statement, said it expects the industry to have exported US$1.7 billion in 2008. The group doesn't t report on farmed salmon or trout exports.
