Malaysia to check on fish supply shortage

The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (MFDA) has been asked to check on the shortage of fish supply in the country.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs minister, Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said he was puzzled over the shortage and was anxious to know the cause of the problem.

Samad said the shortage caused prices for several types of seafood to go up.

He said the government had helped fishermen in cutting down their operating expenses by providing subsidy on diesel and other incentives.

He also said although the fishermen have been given assistance, this has not been reflected in the amount of fish for sale.

He added that he wanted MFDA to solve the shortage immediately as the rise in prices would not only burden consumers but the situation might worsen if not rectified.
