Wet weather in South Brazil further helps soy

The wet weather this weekend has continued to help the soy crop in the south of Brazil, local weather service Somar said on Monday (January 19).

"The wet weather this weekend was very good for the soy crop and the situation is much calmer now," said Celso Oliveira, a meteorologist at Somar.

Towns such as Cascavel and Toledo in Parana, Brazil's No. 2 soy-growing state, are still seeing around 6 millimetres of rain on Monday, but will be dry for the rest of the week.

Northward, the town of Apucarana should be doused with 27 millimetres of rain on Monday.

Rio Grande do Sul state, the No. 3 soy-producing state, also is seeing rain across many soy-growing areas.

For instance, areas around towns such as Cruz Alta and Passo Fundo are seeing rain Monday with around 10 millimetres expected. But the showers will dry up for the rest of the week.

Brazil is the world's second largest soy producer after the US.
