US scientists develop new winter wheat variety

South Dakota State University (SDSU) in the US has launched a new hard red winter wheat variety named Lyman.

Tested as SD00111-9, the new variety was released as Foundation Seed to Certified Seed growers in last autumn, with Registered Seed to be available this year and Certified Seed in 2010.

Lyman is similar to Arapahoe in maturity, height and winter hardiness, but has slightly less straw strength than Arapahoe.

Lyman has good disease resistance, so it may be a planting option in the southeast part of the state where disease could be a problem, said SDSU winter wheat breeder Bill Berzonsky.

In performance trials, Lyman was thought to be one of the most scab-resistant winter wheat variety in the north central region, and could resist well to leaf rust and stem rust.

Lyman is also ranked first in 30 varieties and experimental lines in 2007 and 10th in 2008 during SDSU's crop performance yield trials.
