China revises up Jan soy imports to 3.05 million tonnes

China's commerce ministry (MOFCOM) revised up its estimates on the country's soy imports for January to 3.05 million tonnes, up from its earlier projected 2.98 million tonnes.

The incomplete figures indicate no slowdown in imports for January when Chinese crushers would scale down production due to the week-long Lunar New Year holidays.

According to official customs figures, China imported 3.3 million tonnes of soy in December, a rise of 12.8 percent from a year earlier.

Beijing's reserve purchases for domestic soy pushed local prices above those of imports, prompting crushers in the north to shift to imports.

The following table shows the ministry's estimates of arrivals and loadings of soy as well as soyoil as reported by buyers at end-December.

The commerce ministry's twice-monthly estimate, based on reports from buyers, fails to capture all shipments but gives a general picture of the direction of trade.
