Ghana poultry farmers urge goverment't to speed up import reduction

The Dormaa Poultry Farmers Association (DPFA) in Ghana, has called on the government to speed up efforts to reduce import of poultry products to protect local farmers.

In a statement, the association identified the influx of imported poultry products as the single most obvious enemy that must be crushed to sustain the poultry industry.

DPFA chairman Nana Kwabena Asamoah Asare noted that there is an unhealthy competition between imported and locally produced poultry traders, adding that most Ghanaians now prefer imported products to local ones because of the price differential.

However, Asare said that given the necessary government support and good environment, the local poultry industry could provide enough to meet the protein requirement of Ghanaians as well as generate employment.
