Russia's poultry imports increases 24 percent

The increase of volume came over the first 11 months of 2007, the US Poultry and Egg Export Council's mission to Russia announced.

Russia imported 812,200 tonnes of poultry this year, which is a significant increase from 2006's 653,100 tonnes.

Vice president of the International Poultry Development Programme and director of the USAPEEC mission, Albert Davleyev, attributed the increase to the gaining popularity of poultry and the weakening dollar.

Davleyev said thanks to the weakening dollar, US suppliers have strengthened their positions on international markets despite the high cost of poultry production in the US due to corn prices and a drought. He added that while the dollar remained stable in US but kept falling overseas, Brazil and Europe poultry has become more expensive and less competitive on international markets, including Russia.
