Turkey's Saray Ciftligi halts livestock purchases

Saray Ciftligi, a Turkish meat and dairy products company halted livestock purchases on Thursday (Jan 13).

Huseyin Teber, Director General of Saray Ciftligi, one of the leading companies in Turkey on dairy and meat production, said that the start of livestock imports after a hike in meat prices caused uncertainties in stockfarming sector.

"Continuation of meat imports caused difficulties for domestic producers. Stockfarming sector can not make plans for future. We can not know how long livestock imports will continue and the level of the prices,"said Teber.

Teber said the markets were not in a good condition and noted the local producers should also be protected.

On April 30, the Council of Ministers authorised EBK to import 16,000 tonnes of live cattle, and 7,500 tonnes of cattle meat (fresh or frozen). However, EBK decided to import livestock instead of importing meat.
