US FDA endorses cloned food

Sales of meat and milk from cloned livestock has been approved by the US food health authority on Tuesday (January 15, 2008).

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also announced that meat and milk from cloned animals are as safe for human consumption as those produced by conventionally bred livestock.

FDA issued three documents outlining its regulatory approach on cloning, including a risk assessment, a risk management plan and guidance for the industry.

The FDA has studied the case for six years in order to decide whether to allow sales of food from cloned animals. In December 2006, FDA released a draft copy of the three documents outlining its regulatory approach on cloning. While FDA allowed food from cloned animals, it did not want producers to market them until it had issued guidelines.

Despite the ruling, opinion polls have shown that most Americans are against foods from cloned animals.
