EU grain output for 08-09 expected to be up 14 percent

The EU's 2008-09 cereal output is now forecast at 292.0 million tonnes, a 14-percent rise on the season, Strategie Grains said Thursday ( January 17, 2008).

This is up 1.4 million tonnes  from last month's forecast, as Strategie Grains increased slightly barley and corn output forecasts and trimmed soft wheat.

Corn output is expected to be up 25 percent compared to Jan 2007-08 with sown area up 10 percent. Barley output  is expected to be up 8 percent.

However, all adjustments were minor as Strategie Grains continues to use trend-line yields during the winter period and there were no official data from member state governments to alter area estimates.

The following tables list Strategie Grain forecasts for 2008-09 production, yields and area.
