Indonesia's CPP Acquires US shrimp broodstock Company
Indonesian publicly listed PT Central Proteinaprima Tbk has acquired US company Shrimp Improvement Systems, LLC (SIS) as part of efforts to become the largest shrimp company in the world.
According to Operational Director of CPP Erwin Sutanto, CPP was attracted by SIS's selective shrimp aquaculture programme which produces broodstock bought by shrimp cultivating companies in over 20 countries worldwide.
The shrimp cultivation program of SIS-the largest genetic shrimp aquaculture and broodstock in the US-would improve the resistance of shrimps to diseases, he said.
He added that the acquisition is a strategic measure for Central Proteinaprima to merge two prominent shrimp companies.
SIS, which is based in Florida Keys, US, has been in the shrimp business since 1998 and has grown into the first and largest commercial broodstock and shrimp aquaculture company in the US.
In Asia, SIS controls a joint company in Thailand (Shrimp Improvement Systems Company, Limited) which produces shrimp larva and manages shrimp broodstock aquaculture facility.
It also operates Shrimp Improvement Systems Pte. Ltd in Singapore, which distributes shrimp larva in Asia.
According to President Director of SIS Edward D. Scura, the company was a pioneer in the shimp genetic research.
SIS opened the market for disease-free shrimp broodstock in over 20 countries, he said.
CPP, which has at least US$500 million in annual sales turnover, is the largest shrimp exporter and producer in Indonesia.
