Pakistan's poultry prices expected to decline in two weeks

Due to short supply, the current price hike in Pakistan's poultry products was termed as temporary but would come down within two weeks, the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) stated.

"The prices of the poultry has gone up due to high demand and short supply as the farmers have reduced production for losses and the situation would improve within 10-15 days' time", Muhammad Aslam, Chairman Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) said.

He said that 30% of the poultry farms are closed as the farmers are not getting due prices for their products. He added that due to the ban on the exports of poultry products, the farmers were not enhancing their production at full capacity as well as not getting proper prices.

He further said that one of the reasons for the increase in the prices of poultry products was the high demand due to marriage season.

The chairman said that at poultry farms, the chicken was available for PKR130 (US$1.23) per kilogramme but due to transportation costs the prices shoot up to PKR165 (US$1.60) per kilogramme.

"If government allows export of poultry products, the farmers would enhance their production and due to surplus production in the country, the rates of the poultry products would also be reduced," he observed.
