Australia to enforce new livestock welfare laws
The Northern Territory now enforces the new laws governing the treatment of livestock during road transport.
The laws are based on pre-existing industry codes of practice and are now being used by all states to ensure there's a consistent approach across Australia.
The Territory's chief vet Malcolm Anderson said the laws provide a way of enforcing acceptable animal welfare standards.
"It shouldn't have a big impact, in that most of these are best practices and general industry standards. What it does do is make sure that community expectations of welfare are enforceable," Anderson said.
