US farmers plant fewest wheat acres in 87 years
A government report reveals that US farmers have planted the lowest winter wheat acres this season since 1913.
The USDA reported on Tuesday (Jan 12) that winter wheat acreage for 2010 totals up to 37.1 million acres, down 14% nationwide from last year.
The agency said the decline was due to the late row crop harvest and also the poor weather which contributed to low prices .
The largest acreage decreases are in Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas. A record low planting was reported in Nebraska, US.
Kansas, the nation's largest winter wheat producer has planted 8.6 million acres, down 8% from the previous year. It is the lowest planted wheat acreage in the state since 1957.
