Germany pig slaughters up 5.3 percent in 2008
The number of pigs slaughtered in Germany in 2008 was up 5.3 percent on 2007 figures to a total of 47.5 million pigs, according to statistics.
Over the pre-Christmas period, total slaughter numbers in the country exceeded 1 million, a considerable increase on earlier weeks.
Although prices at slaughter were on average 16.6 percent above year earlier levels, higher production costs mostly offset this increase for producers.
