Scotland's Johnson Sustainable Seafood releases 1 millionth cod
This week, Scottish Cod farming company Johnson Sustainable Seafood's (JSS), operating the world's largest dedicated organic cod hatchery, is celebrating the release of its one millionth codling for the year from its hatchery in Sandwick.
This is the first time this quantity of juvenile cod has been produced in the EU.
Another 450,000 fish are set to be put in the sea before the end of January.
This level of production was achieved even before the hatchery was fully completed. The hatchery is to be completed later this year.
All codlings are bred from selected brood stock at the hatchery.
Their brand NO CATCH¡JUST COD is certified by the Organic Food Federation and recommended by Greenpeace.
Managing Director of JSS Karol Rzepkowski said that given the huge challenges any new industry presents, to be able to produce juvenile cod in such numbers in their first full year's production proves the dedication of the hatchery team and the high calibre of personnel involved in the project.
