Orissa to boost dairy and poultry output
The Indian state of Orissa has drawn up a Rs5,455 crore 10-year plan to expand dairy and poultry production.
Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Damodar Rout said there are plans to double milk production from 1.5 million tonnes to three million tonnes in the next five years, and take the production level to 4.8 million tonnes by 2020.
The current per capita availability of milk in Orissa is 102 grammes a day, but the demand is expected to increase to 260 grammes by 2020.
The department also plans to increase meat production from 62,000 tonne to 1.1 million tonnes a day and poultry meat output from 70,000 tonne to 100,000 tonnes per annum by 2020.
The per capita availability of meat in Orissa is 1.5 kg.
Egg production will be increased from four million pieces to 10 million pieces a day during the same period.
The Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department is not only aiming to achieve self-sufficiency in milk, egg and meat production, but to also produce a surplus and provide sustainable livelihood to the poor in the state.
The department plans to invest Rs1,484 crore during the next five years, with total investment in the dairy, poultry and other livestock to amount to Rs2,251 crore by 2020.
In the fisheries sector, the government has planned to invest Rs1,840 crore in the next five years and the projected investment by 2020 will be Rs3,204 crore.
The plan will be submitted to the Planning Commission.
