Tyson completes expansion of Kansas meat facility

Tyson Foods, Inc. has completed a line expansion at its prepared food facility in Emporia, Kansas, US, according to the company's press release in December 2014.

The plant is one of Tyson Foods' specialty meat plants, and produces both branded and private label cuts of beef, pork and chicken for the food service and retail sectors.

At an estimated US$3 million, the expansion includes a new room to house the line, modifications to existing refrigeration and the installation of equipment. It will also create about 16 additional jobs, a development welcomed by Kansas Governor Sam Brownback.

"...this expansion solidifies the important role Kansas plays in providing food to the nation," said Brownback.

Tyson had received assistance from the Kansas Department of Commerce which helped to provide tax credits for new capital investment and training credits for the company to build and maintain its workforce.

The Emporia plant was placed under ownership by IBP, Inc. in 1967 before the company was bought over by Tyson Foods in 2001.

It was then converted into a specialty meats facility in 2008 and currently has a manpower of about 950 people.
