Bulgaria reports another FMD outbreak
The Bulgarian veterinary authorities have reported another outbreak of foot and mouth disease, which affected cattle, sheep and goats this time.
The World Organisation for Animal Health received a follow-up report yesterday, January 11.
According to the report, the latest outbreak took place at Kosti village in Burgas. A total of 194 cattle and 72 swine were found susceptible to the disease. No deaths were recorded and no animals were destroyed.
Meat and meat products from infected wild boars are considered as the source of the disease spreading FMD in the domestic population.
One hundred twenty-one out of 194 blood samples from cattle were tested and one positive result by non-structural protein ELISA was obtained. Twenty-two out of 72 blood samples from pigs were tested and eight positive results by non-structural protein ELISA were obtained.
Stamping out of all susceptible animals started yesterday (Jan 11) and will finish today, January 12.
