TASA posts record fishmeal output and exports in 2009
Peru's Tecnologica de Alimentos SA (TASA) has registered record fishmeal output and exports in 2009, at 352,000 tonnes and 351,000 tonnes, respectively.
The production was an increase from 325,000 tonnes produced in 2008.
About 60% of exports went to Asian countries, specifically China, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
TASA adviser Humberto Speziani said Asian countries are currently buying a greater amount of high quality fishmeal. The Asian market is very lucrative with prices at over US$1,600 per tonne, he said.
Meanwhile, TASA is evaluating the possibility of entering the Chilean salmon farming industry. The company has yet to contact any Chilean firm, but the project may be announced in Chile this year, said Speziani.
