Ukraine 2008 grain crop records 53.3 million tonnes
                                      


Ukraine's 2008 grain harvest reached a record high of 53.3 million tonnes in clean weight, up from 29.3 million tonnes in 2007, according to the State Statistics Committee on Monday (Jan 12).

 

The wheat crop reached 25.9 million tonnes, up from 13.94 million tonnes in 2007. Barley harvest rose to 12.61 million tonnes from 5.98 a year ago.

 

Corn harvest totalled 11.42 million tonnes, compared with 7.42 million tonnes in 2007.

 

This year's grain harvest, however, may fall to around 45 million tonnes, according to the Economy Ministry and UkrAgroConsult.

 

Ukraine consumes up to 26 million tonnes of grain per year.
