Beef production in Australia, the second-biggest global exporter after Brazil, fell 7.8 percent on month in November to a seasonally adjusted 175,354 tonnes and was down 1.3 percent from November 2007, according to the government's Bureau of Statistics.

The total number of cattle including calves slaughtered in November, at 661,800 beasts, was down 5.4 percent on month but up 1.1 percent on year, it reported.

The bureau doesn't explain movements in the figures.

Australia exports two-thirds of its beef production to major markets Japan, the US, South Korea, Russia, Indonesia and Taiwan.

The level of exports is closely tied to production.
