Brazil's grain production to increase substantially in 2010

 

 

The Brazilian grain crop is expected to increase 5.2% on-year to reach 140.7 million tonnes this year.

 

This new estimation is released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Thursday (Jan 7).

 

The projection said planted areas in Brazil would total 48.1 million hectares, up 2% from 2009. Soy acreage will increase 5.8% on-year while corn acreage will fall 7.1%.

 

Rice, corn and soy would take up 81.4% of the planted area in Brazil.

 

The soy crop is expected to reach 65.2 million tonnes, up 14.4% from 2009 and the corn crop would reach 32.8 million tonnes, down 3.2%.

 

The 2009 grain crop was estimated at 133.8 million tonnes, down 8.3% from 2008. Despite the decrease, the grain crop is the second highest ever registered.
