Ukraine is likely to resume grain exports at the end of January, with the Economy Ministry already accepting applications from exporters for licenses, the Economy Ministry announced on Thursday (January 10, 2008).

The ministry said 34 applications had been accepted from exporters for licenses for wheat, barley and corn to Jan. 9.

Ukraine's grain harvest fell in 2007 due to adverse weather conditions, to about 29 million  tonnes from 34.3 million tonnes in 2006, and the government imposed a grain export quota of only 12,000 tonnes from Jul. 1 2007 until Jan. 1 2008.

The government has decided that 1.2 million tonnes of grain harvested in 2007 will be allowed for export between Jan. 1 and March 31 this year.
