Bulgaria's poultry and egg production sees strong increase for 2006

Bulgaria's industrial poultry production is estimated to have reached 93,000 tonnes in 2006 compared to 86,000 tonnes a year earlier, said the Union of Poultry Breeders.

Exports are estimated to have risen marginally to 9,000 tonnes from 8,600 tonnes in 2005. Water-dwelling birds accounted for 7,000 tonnes of the export total with foie gras making up the balance.

Domestic poultry consumption remains flat, compared to the previous year, at 133,000 tonnes.

The EU has certified for export 11 of the nation's 50 poultry slaughterhouses. Another 4 are pending certification.

Egg production is expected to hit 1.7 billion in 2006 compared to 1.55 billion a year ago. Bulgaria's egg exports go mainly to Switzerland.
