An eFeedLink Exclusive
Price summary
Thai chicken price is unchanged after New Year, with stable demand in many areas, while lower chicken supply in the south pushes its price highest in the country to THB50-52/kg (US$1.51-1.58/kg).
Chicken is traded in the North and Northeastern region in the range of THB42-44/kg (US$1.27-1.33/kg), while in the Central, Eastern and Western regions, it is traded in the range of THB44-46/kg (US$1.33-1.39/kg).
During this month before the Chinese New Year, high demand in chicken and pork will continue to support their prices until the end of this month.
Market analysis
This year, it is expected that all chicken products exported to Japan will reach 300,000 tonnes, worth THB40,000 million, or US$ 1,250 million. Total Thai chicken export is expected to reach 650,000 tonnes, worth THB80,000 million or US$2,500 million.
Last year, Japan imported frozen chicken mainly from Brazil and some from the United States, while cooked chicken was imported mainly from Thailand and China.
In 2003, before the import ban was imposed, Japan took delivery of 150,000 tonnes of frozen chicken from Thailand. After of the announcement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) that Thailand is free from bird flu in December 2013 and obtaining the health certificate, Thai fresh chicken may be exported to Japan in the first quarter of 2014, thus increasing demand in the Thai chicken industry.
Some Japanese traders have already made contacts with local suppliers and with the lifting of the ban, Thailand may challenge the No 1 market position from Brazil in terms of frozen chicken exports.
Last year, Singapore allowed frozen Thai chicken back into its market after nine years. It set one condition that the chicken must be in a closed system or in a compartmentalised area, which is a new standard set by the Livestock Department to control bird flu.
These positive factors will provide more opportunities for the Thai chicken industry to reach its target this year.
