Peru to strengthen seafood shipments to US

Peru will strengthen strategic alliances with warehouse membership stores and supercentre stores in order for Peruvian seafood shipments to grow faster in the US.

The Trade and Investment Promotion Office of Peru in Los Angeles (California) explained that within the structure of the US retail channel, the supermarkets are those with the best growth prospects for Peruvian seafood exports in the coming years.

Moreover, it noted that in the US, supermarkets continue to lead sales of seafood with a 70% at the end of 2012.

The office in charge of the expansion of Peru's exportable offer in western US stated that according to the characteristics of the American seafood market, the most promising opportunities for Peruvian supply of seafood are in the segment of frozen products.

In pursuing this aim, it pointed out that Peruvian seafood producers should develop a more innovative and higher value-added products, easy to prepare, with a high nutritional content and competitive prices.

The American seafood sector has consolidated a growth of 14.6% in retail sales in recent years, and it is estimated that in 2012 this sector totalled US$16 billion.
