China think tank ups 2008 corn, rice output estimates

China's think tank Thursday (January 8) increased its 2008 crop year output estimates for corn and rice substantially, while keeping the estimates for other major crops unchanged.

The China National Grain and Oils Information Centre hiked its corn output forecast by 9.5 million tonnes to 165.5 million tonnes, compared with its earlier estimate of 156 million tonnes, on higher unit yields.

The Centre also raised its rice output forecast by 4 million tonnes to 193 million tonnes, compared with the earlier forecast of 189 million tonnes, on an increased acreage of 200,000 hectares.

It kept its output estimates for wheat, soy and rapeseed unchanged.
