Brazil to implant micro chips in cattle
Brazil will now use micro chip implants for cattle, replacing the ear tags that have caused recent problems with the EU in regards to cattle identification.
The new micro chip will be implanted into calves at birth, providing the full history and traceability from birth to slaughter.
The device, developed by Brazil's Ministry of Science and Technology and Ceitic Semiconductor Systems, will be placed into one million calves this year.
When the EU banned Brazilian beef in January 2008, it has given Brazil time to develop the product.
