BPEX Export Bulletin-January 2013 (Week 1)

This week's export news

At last, the eagerly awaited export health certificate 6838EHC for the export of pork (for further heat treatment - from Great Britain only) from listed premises to Australia has been made available by Carlisle. We expect a sizeable trade to start rapidly.

At the end of 2012, PIC and its franchise partner Iwatani Corporation in Japan celebrated 30 years of successful collaboration. In 1982, the first licensing agreement was ratified by Ken Woolley and Naoji Iwatani, the founder of the diversified energy conglomerate.

Westaway Sausages Far Eastern export success is presented as a case study by UKTI on their site at: http://www.ukti.gov.uk/pt_pt/uktihome/item/420240.html?null

From 1 January, a large proportion of the pork produced in Europe is de facto illegal. According to the European Commission (SCoFCAH) only five countries out of twenty-seven have so far fulfilled the requirement of the stall and tether ban: the UK, Sweden, Luxembourg, Estonia and Austria. Four countries, according to the same report, have less than half of their sow herd complying with the new regulations, including major producers Germany, France and Belgium. The European Commission is expected to provide an update to these numbers in January.

France

Aoste & Cie

The French charcuterie manufacturer has closed two sites. The group has closed one factory located in Boffres (south) and in early December the management announced the closure of a second site located in Yssingeaux (centre-south). Three other sites are affected by these closures with the loss of 66 jobs and the modification of 29 contracts. The French Federation of Charcuterie processors (FICT) declared that ten years ago the profit in the sector was 1% on average, today most companies just break even restricting technical and marketing innovations in the sector.

Protecting the environment, but by how far?

In Brittany, the nitrate content of rivers has decreased by 30% since 1991. Over the past 20 years, Nitrogen treatment has increased by as much as 80%; 443 water treatment units have been installed and 20,000 livestock producers have engaged in environmental programmes. In the meantime, the number of sows has decreased by 16% and ,by the end of 2014, production in Brittany is expected to fall by a further 1m pigs, this represents the annual throughput of a Britton abattoir.

Markets

Pigs

In Northern Europe, market activity has been very low due to the Christmas holiday. According to the "Marché du Porc Breton", slaughter throughputs fell by half compared with previous weeks. Prices remained stable as anticipated by most European breeders. Also, exporters take a break during the Christmas period and will recommence after the New Year holiday.

Piglets

The market was very calm last week, several quotations were unpublished.

Market unchanged

Pork prices are mostly unchanged. The fresh meat retail trade exceeded expectations over the Christmas period. However, the processed pork trade is quite disappointing. Due to the lack of demand, a number of lines, including bellies, bacon and fats went into cold store. (Source: BPEX)
