China Egg Fortnightly Report - Prices Stable; Difference between Regions Narrowed (January 6, 2005)

An eFeedLink exclusive report

Egg prices in China remained generally stable over the last two weeks, with minor fluctuations reported in some regions. As shown in the price chart below, variations of egg prices across the nine major trade markets have narrowed. Wholesale egg prices fluctuated by a mere RMB0.3/ton for the period between December 20, 2004 and January 4, 2005.

According to analysts, China's egg prices have stabilized at a reasonable price range after extensive fluctuations in 2004. With the New Year Day holiday over, demand has stabilized with negligible price change in the early part of this week.

In the mid and longer term, prices of aquatic and poultry products are expected to rise further, with freshwater fishing season coming to end and the higher poultry consumption during winter season.  Additionally, the incessant snowfall across northern China regions is posing problems for egg production and transportation of poultry products. Hence in the longer term, analysts believe that egg prices in China will remain largely stable, with some increases seen in non-key producing regions due to transportation problems.
