Philippine Feed Weekly: Feed grain prices drop on Christmas week (week ended Dec 19, 2013)
An eFeedLink exclusive
Price summary
Prices of Philippine feed grains were down on Christmas week as livestock raisers slowed down on feed purchase albeit rising prices for farmgate hogs that week.
Traders believe that the low prices particularly of imported feed grains may be due to low prices in other countries.
Market observers believe that prices will improve following the expected surge in demand for meat in the first quarter of 2014.
Market Analysis
Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture aims to improve corn production this year as a preparation for the ASEAN integration in 2015.
According to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, the Philippines has a competitive edge in corn production over neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia which are highly dependent on the US for corn.
Alcala added the country's progressive cultivation methods can help produce corn all-year round. The secretary however declined to give an estimate on target corn production in 2014, saying stakeholders are still in the process of consolidating their plans. But he said the government is all set on building additional infrastructure for postharvest and other corn processing facilities to achieve improved corn production this year.
