Bulgaria likely to import wheat

There is likely a need for wheat imports for Bulgaria and there is a possibility that the grain will be imported from Hungary.

Nobody can predict with accuracy what the amount of grain from Bulgaria, at what point can it be exported and what amount will accordingly have to be imported for the needs of millers. In her words, the last import of wheat was made in 2004.

However, logic suggests that if there is necessity of importing grains, it will be more expensive because of transport costs, and this may affect the price of flour and bread.

"Wheat is an exchange good, internationally traded. Bulgaria exports wheat and it's no secret. This is a good thing and for the same reason as we do exports, we may do import. We are an open market; we are members of the European Union, and the world economy as well. There's nothing scary in this," said chairperson of the Union of Millers in Bulgaria Savina Vlahova. This confirmed that it is likely that imports of grain to be made from Hungary, as a relatively close member of the European Union to Bulgaria.
