Vietnam to develop local poultry breeds
The Vietnam government seeks to reduce reliance on imported poultries by developing its own local breeds.
Vietnam's Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, has announced a program to develop domestic plant and livestock varieties through 2020. The program is expected to receive substantial state funding.
As part of its plans to develop the domestic poultry sector, the Vietnamese government is encouraging the breeding of domestic poultry varieties to replace imported ones.
Provisional figures have shown that Vietnam's poultry industry performed well in the first nine months of 2009, with the number of poultry as of October 1, 2009, reaching 280 million birds, 12.83% higher than the same period in 2008.
