Uganda sees increased fish exports

Uganda's fish export earnings have risen from US$145 million (sh253.7b) in 2005 to US$150 million in 2006, well within the expectations of the Ministry of Fisheries.

Ministry of Fisheries spokesman Dick Nyeko said the country's fish processing industry have just been inspected by EU authorities and business is growing now that the market is assured.

Nyeko said Uganda also wanted to strengthen its cooperation with Egypt, which accounts for most of the fish farming in Africa.

Fish farming in Uganda contributes 18 percent of the revenue in the country's agriculture sector and is expected to rise further, Nyeko said.
