Indonesia To Boost Shrimp Production
The Indonesian government, which has announced a ban on shrimp imports, said it will seek to boost production of that commodity taking advantage of growing demand in export market.
Fisheries and Maritime Minister Freddy Numeri said the government will set aside Rp20 billion (US$2.2 million) in aid for farmers every year for the program.
Freddy said the fund will also be used to improve breeding facilities to guarantee good quality of the country's shrimp.
He said he had also discussed with the finance minister the possibility of abolishing the 10 per cent value added tax on shrimp.
The government recently banned imports of shrimp to prevent the spread of virus and disease that have been found contaminating shrimp sold in international market.
